Claire did a Q&A with the web SMH. Read the full Q&A below.

So, you spent four years in the world of The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off series The Originals. You have left that world. Why did you decide to do Aquarius?

You know, I was looking for something totally different, I read the script and just immediately connected to it. It felt so original and so unique and something that I’ve never really done before and then the opportunity to work with David [Duchovny] was a huge plus. And then also to play a character [Charmain Tully] that was really at the forefront of women’s rights. I fought my butt off for this role. I was really passionate about it.

Do you see her story as a quintessentially feminist story, in that she’s ahead of the curve in the late 1960s in the police world?

Absolutely. I think what’s amazing about this character is she really is the first female to be allowed to do anything of significance in the police force. Women [police officers] made coffee and they did the filing and they were basically glorified secretaries. Being given a chance to go undercover and to do things that women really weren’t allowed to do, it was really exciting.

There’s a scene in the pilot, when she’s undercover, and she’s almost bartered for sex, that was an intense scene, but very revealing about the era and the issues women faced.

Totally. She has no chance to say no and I think, you know, she had wanted so badly to be given the opportunity to go undercover and to do something of significance, I think there was this internal struggle for her. What’s really cool I think in the end is how Shafe … is sort of protective of her and respectful of her and it shows the really nice bond and chemistry that they start to create throughout the series.

Do you see this as a period piece, in terms of the look, the clothes, the architecture, the furniture, all the little touches?

Everything. I mean, from the costume to the hair and make-up to the set design to the music. It’s really an era that I’m so excited to be able to delve into and it’s definitely a period piece. I was born in the 1980s, so learning about the late 1960s was really fascinating, not only just because of the way things looked and sounded but because of what was going on in society at that time.

So, Charmain has a certain physicality, her police uniform, her hair pulled back, it’s a very severe look. Do you inhabit that physicality consciously?

Totally. Putting on the uniform … I automatically develop kind of a certain posture. When I put on her clothes, and when I have her hair, whilst I’m still wearing a skirt, which is mind-boggling to me, and I carry my gun in a handbag, it’s definitely empowering to put that suit on and it helps me to feel what I think Charmain would have been feeling.

Working with David Duchovny, he’s a bit of a legend because of The X Files, and based on your age, you perhaps knew him as a star before you became a working actress. Does the man live up to his celebrity?

He’s frighteningly talented and … it was incredibly intimidating when I first started. I think Grey [co-star Grey Damon] and I both bonded over that, this formidable force, this amazing actor who has already had a hugely successful career. To come and try and stand next to him in a scene and try and hold your own, it’s frightening, it’s a frightening prospect. But he’s been so wonderful and so generous as an actor and he’s really great to work with. He’s a really supportive scene partner. That’s what has been so cool … having this preconceived idea of this person, getting to work with him, and seeing him as a person and how his work ethic is so amazing.
